Good vs. Bad

E has been obsessed with good guy versus bad guy lately.  When he plays, he frequently asks me if he can be the good guy and I play the bad guy.  He has good cars and bad cars.  When he goes to bed at night, he has to bring one good car and one bad car to bed with him.  In his world, the good guy always wins and the bad guy is taken to jail, locked up, etc.

When his daddy goes to work, he fights the bad guys and traps them with his handcuffs and brings them to jail.  This is what all Woo-Woo Men (police officers) do.  Again, the good guy always wins.

I really wish that this was the way the world worked.  I wish that the good guys always won and the bad guys always went to jail.  Lately, this hasn't been the way that things have been working.  Officer Schneider responded to a domestic call in Lake City, MN last December.  It should have worked out like E thought it is supposed to-good guy wins-bad guy goes to jail.  The bad guy tried to shoot at his girlfriend who was running away from him to the good guy for help and the good guy got struck with the bullet.  Officer Schneider succumbed to his injuries and passed away, leaving behind a wife and three small children.

Officer Schneider's funeral was this past Saturday.  Police Officer funerals are an amazing sight.  Officer Schneider's funeral nothing less than amazing.  Over 2,000 police officers attended the funeral, officers from all over the country attended.  Of course, there was media coverage and E saw the funeral procession on the news that evening.

E had many questions while watching the short news clip.  He wanted to know why all the woo-woo men were in one place, he wanted to know why there was a horse drawn carriage, he wanted to know when the man in the box was going to stand up again.

Joe and I have always tried to be as honest with E as we can be.  We call our body parts by their anatomical names, he has been to a funeral and he knows about God.  So when E asked these questions about the officers funeral, I was as honest as I could be with him.  I told him that the police officer was shot by the bad guy and it took him awhile to process this, because in his world, good guys always win.

I explained to him that sometimes the good guys don't always win and this is why we always tell Daddy that we love him when he leaves for work and we say prayers for the police officers whenever we see one.  I wasn't sure if he got it, but he did.  The way he tucked his head into my shoulder and got very quite, I knew that he understood.

Because it was such a tough week in the LEO world, E and I wanted to do something for Joe's shift on Saturday.  So we made cookies for Joe to bring to work with him, it was the least we could do for the good guys!

This picture now hangs in Joe's locker!
